Spelling
At Eastern Green Junior School we believe that learning to spell words correctly is an important part of the writing process. As spelling becomes more automatic, pupils are able to put more emphasis onto the content of writing. During weekly lessons, spelling is taught through the Spelling Shed scheme of work. Through this, children are taught about the morphology and etymology of words to help develop their understanding of spelling patterns and rules. We believe that practising spelling patterns is important to allow children to review, consolidate and remember key ideas. Therefore spelling homework is set weekly on Spelling Shed.
We recognise that the teaching of phonics plays an important role in children’s ability to spell. For those children who require further phonics support upon entry to Key Stage 2, this takes place through regular intervention groups.
