Reading

Aims and Values

At Eastern Green Junior School, we believe that reading is an essential life skill and we are committed to enabling all children to become lifelong readers. They have the chance to follow an enriching curriculum, exposing them to a range of texts. At the centre of our reading curriculum is the drive to foster a love of reading, enriching children's learning through carefully chosen texts and activities.

We recognise that reading is key to success in learning and has a strong impact upon all other curriculum areas. We strive to develop fluent readers who understand what they are reading and confidently talk about texts. Cross-curricular links are made where possible and texts are sometimes chosen because of their connection with wider learning. Some texts are also chosen because of the route they offer into discussing and exploring social, emotional and cultural issues. The teaching of reading is carefully planned to meet the needs of all of our children.

We recognise the importance of taking a consistent whole school approach to reading. As a school, we teach the skills of reading (as outlined in the National Curriculum) through the use of VIPERS (created by The Literacy Shed).
