British Values
British Values
At Eastern Green Junior School we actively promote British Values as part of our commitment to pupils’ personal development, inclusion and preparation for life in modern Britain. We expect all pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to participate fully in society and contribute positively to their communities.
These values are embedded throughout our curriculum, school ethos and daily interactions. We encourage pupils to think critically, express their views respectfully and understand the rights and responsibilities of living in a democratic society. We also challenge pupils, staff or parents who express views that are contrary to fundamental British values.

Democracy
Pupils learn how democracy works and how their voice can influence decisions.
This is developed through:
-
Teaching pupils about public institutions and democratic processes in Britain.
-
Opportunities for pupil voice and participation in school decision-making.
-
Mock elections and debates where pupils learn to present and defend viewpoints respectfully.
-
Learning about how public services operate and are held to account.
The Rule of Law
Pupils develop an understanding of the importance of rules, laws and responsibilities in society.
We support this by:
-
Ensuring clear, consistent and fair school rules.
-
Helping pupils understand the difference between right and wrong and the consequences of actions.
-
Teaching pupils about the role of the law in protecting individuals and maintaining fairness.
-
Learning about the justice system and meeting visitors such as police officers.
-
Using restorative approaches to help pupils resolve conflict and take responsibility for their behaviour.
Individual Liberty
We support pupils to develop independence, confidence and the ability to make responsible choices.
This includes:
-
Promoting self-confidence, resilience and responsibility.
-
Encouraging pupil voice and freedom of expression, within a safe and respectful environment.
-
Challenging stereotypes and bias and encouraging critical thinking.
-
Promoting a strong anti-bullying culture, including Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.
-
Supporting pupils to understand their rights through the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools agenda.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Pupils are encouraged to respect others and understand the diversity of modern Britain.
We promote this by:
-
Developing respect for different cultures, beliefs and ways of life.
-
Challenging prejudice and discriminatory behaviour.
-
Learning about different faiths and cultures, including visits to places of worship.
-
Encouraging discussion about diversity, including faith, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexuality and family circumstances.
-
Helping pupils develop empathy, understanding and respectful relationships.
Through these values, we aim to develop pupils who are respectful, responsible and active citizens, ready to contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
