Sports Premium
What is Sports Premium?
The Government is providing funding of £150 million per annum to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
The purpose of the funding is that schools will have to spend the sport funding in improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Funding for schools will be calculated by the number of primary aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11) as at the annual census in January 2013.
All schools with 17 or more primary aged pupils will receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus a premium of £10 per pupil. Smaller schools will receive £500 per pupil.
How is it spent?
Schools will be held to account for how they spend the sport funding. Ofsted has strengthened its coverage of sport and PE within the Inspectors’ Handbook and supporting guidance, so that schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision offered. This funding will cover a number of areas of the subject such: professional coaching, competitions, equipment and staff professional development.
How will the impact be measured?
Schools will be able to draw on the information on effective practice taken from case studies provided by the very best schools. One year on, Ofsted will carry out a survey on the first year’s expenditure and its impact.
Sports' Premium at Eastern Green Junior School
All children at our school have 2 hours dedicated to PE and Games delivered by class teachers. They are able to take part in whole school sporting events and over the past two years we have worked hard to offer a wider range of extra- curricular activities and increase participation in these activities. Our PE Leader, Mrs Pearson-Dodd, ensures there are opportunities for children to take part in competitions both internally and externally. Our lunchtime activities also help to increase physical activity and engagement, encouraged by our lunchtime team. A daily mile track ensures that children are taking part in additional activity throughout the school day.
